The course for you if ...

You are passionate and enthusiastic about a career working with children. This course is designed to help you build the knowledge and skills needed when working under supervision with children and young people.

What will I study?

Not only will you gain knowledge from classroom-based learning, you will also get the best of both worlds by putting your new skills into practice in real work environments.

The aim of this qualification is to prepare you to work with children between birth and five years, with knowledge of children up to seven years.

Entry Requirements

Minimum of 4 GCSEs at Grade D or above (preferably including English); or pass at BTEC Level 1 Certificate or equivalent; or progression from a relevant Level 1 qualification. You will need to attend an interview with a course tutor and demonstrate an interest in working with children. DBS check and two confidential references and the ability to work in demanding placement settings are necessary.


All units will be internally assessed using a range of methods, which could include: a portfolio of evidence, written assignments, interactive elements using iPads, or a task set by CACHE. Some learning outcomes within this qualification will require assessment in a real work environment.

Progression & Careers

You may be able to progress onto the Level 3 Diploma in Children’s Play, Learning & Development (Early Years Educator) at TyneMet. Careers include: employment in the
Childcare industry such as Assistant Playgroup Workers, Children’s Centre Assistant, Assistant in Day Nurseries/Nursery Schools/Classes in Primary Schools.
