Catering staff at TyneMet College were delighted when the winner of the North Tyneside Curry Chef Competition, Afsar Quresh, from the Spice Palace, Wallsend, offered to come in and help students prepare a Curry Night for guests in the newly refurbished Retreat Restaurant at the Coast Road Campus.

The Level 1 and 2 students were taught by Afsar to create authentic curries offering a choice to the paying Retreat Restaurant guests.   The 3 course menu for the evening consisted of a starter of fried chicken, mushroom and garlic, for the main course there was a choice of chicken habib, beef orchari or a vegetarian curry with a side dish of mixed vegetable bhaji and banana fritter for dessert for only £9.95 per person.

Afsar worked with the students teaching them how to prepare and cook the ingredients for each dish, introducing them to the use of spices and demonstrated how to present the dishes to serve.

"We were very pleased that Afsar offered to come in and work with our students.  Winning the North Tyneside Curry Chef Competition, which was held here in the kitchens at TyneMet College, means that Afsar will now go on to compete in the Regional Curry Chef Competition, we wish him well and hope that he can come back again soon to work with the students.

We aim to provide high quality enrichment activities for our students to take part in and the Curry Night proved to be a huge success.  The students worked hard, serving the guests, with drinks and food, some were only Level 1 students but the hospitality skills they have learnt so far on their course enabled them to make the evening a huge success.  The paying guests all said that they would like us to be able to offer another Curry Night in the future, this is definitely an activity that we are planning to repeat."
