The North East Sports Academy (NESA) at TyneMet College works in partnership with the Newcastle Eagles Basketball Team, because of this established relationship, Eagles player Darius Defoe was able to approach TyneMet College's Strength and Conditioning, Coach, Chris Bunten, with a view to helping him prepare for the upcoming season.

Darius, 26 and 6ft 9" has been a prominent team member of the Newcastle Eagles over the last 8 seasons and has been instrumental in leading the Eagles to becoming the most successful team in the British Basketball League (BBL).  Darius's game performance has gone from strength to strength and he is now always amongst the league leaders in rebounds and blocks.

Last season the Newcastle Eagles struggled with injuries to 4 main players and their coach, Fab Flournoy was out of the game for the majority of the season.

Having struggled last season with knee pains, Darius was determined to build up his level of fitness and performance and restore the impressive dynasty that the Eagles had previously led.

Chris Bunten, Strength and Conditioning Coach at Flex Fitness Gym on the TyneMet College Campus, formulated a structured strength and conditioning plan for Darius.  The main aim of the plan was to help athletes like Darius to enhance their sporting performance by increasing strength, improve cardiovascular fitness and reduce the risk of injury.  Darius began following the plan in July and since then his improvements have been noted as impressive.

Chris Bunten said,

"Darius is a pleasure to work with; he is driven and dedicated, putting 100% effort in to all his sessions. His motivation and commitment to succeed has taken his conditioning and strength to the next level.  He is a natural athlete and very powerful, over the past 3 months he has smashed all his personal best Olympic lifts in the weights room".

Darius said,

"Working with Chris has been fantastic; I have seen noticeable improvements to my strength and fitness levels, my game has improved, I feel fit and am more importantly injury free, I am confidently looking forward to the season ahead."

Fab Flournoy, Newcastle Eagles Coach, contacted Chris to thank him for all of the help and support Darius had received.

Evidence of Darius's elevated performance was clearly displayed when playing against local rivals Durham when he led all scorers with 23 points which contributed to a convincing 66 v 88 victory.
