A group of Art and Design Students from the college's Creative Studios have been invited to the National Glass Centre in Sunderland to discover more about glass blowing.

And they created something with a distinctly festive feel. The ten students were invited to the centre by Cate Watkinson who is a local Glass Artist.

She is currently undertaking a commission for a public sculpture outside the new police station close to TyneMet's Coast Road campus.

Cate has also been into College to talk to students about her work as a freelance Artist. After the visit, she invited students to the National Glass Centre to introduce them to the art of glass blowing and to see the courses available if they want to progress into a career involving glass.

During the visit, the students all blew their own Christmas glass baubles at the event which was sponsored by Gateshead Council.

Their teacher, Tracy Affleck said: "We had such a good day and the students loved their baubles! It was great to be invited to see the experts in action and to get a chance to have a go ourselves. I think the finished products looked fantastic.\
