Level 1 Extended Certificate in Business
Course Overview
The course is for you if you’re interested in business and you want to build an exciting career in this sector, but do not have enough GCSEs or would like a gentle introduction to the subject.
You will study the level 1 Extended Certificate in Business programme, which is the equivalent to three GCSEs at grade 3, alongside GCSE English and mathematics if required. For adult learners you may access the level 1 functional skills in English and mathematics instead.
This course looks at the various aspects of business which will give you an understanding of business through exploring a variety of subjects. It will allow you to gain access to a variety of level 2 programmes as this is a subject which opens many doors to a variety of sectors.
This course has been specifically designed to allow you to gain the skills, knowledge and experiences required by local employers in the business sector. It has a mix of practical and theory-based units which are assessed through exams and coursework.
There are no entry requirements for this course, just a passion to succeed and work hard.
This course is ideal for ESOL, SEN and adult learners. It allows you to gain confidence in your academic abilities whilst gaining employability skills alongside the programme.

For the work experience unit you will gain employability skills before taking on a week of experience, on placement, in a sector you are interested in.
Assessment is through practical tasks, group work, individual assignments and an exam in finance and an exam in marketing.
You could progress onto further study on a level 2 qualification or an apprenticeship in business-related subjects, alternatively, you could enter full-time employment in the business sector.

For students aged 16-18 who have not yet achieved a grade 4 in Maths or English, these subjects will be included in your timetable along with your main course. Improving your skills in Maths and English is essential, as these qualifications open doors to further study and career opportunities.
Our teaching team will work with you to help you achieve the grades you need, building confidence in these key areas to support your future success.
All 16-18 students must study maths and/or English as part of their main study programme, there is no option to study maths and/or English on its own.
