BTEC Level 4 Higher National Certificate in Community Coaching for England
Course Overview
The BTEC Level 4 Higher National Certificate (HNC) in Community Coaching is designed to provide learners with the knowledge, skills, and understanding required for a career in community coaching within various sports and recreational settings. This programme offers a comprehensive blend of theoretical knowledge and practical application to equip individuals with the necessary competencies to excel in the field of community coaching.

- Fundamentals of Sport and Exercise Psychology
- Anatomy and Physiology
- Professional Skills (Pearson set)
- Coaching Practice and Skills Development
- Training, Fitness, Testing
- Lifestyle Coaching
- Community Coaching
To be able to study on the course, you will need the following:
- A BTEC Level 3 qualification in Sport or Sport & Exercise Science
- A GCE Advanced Level profile that demonstrates strong performance in a relevant subject or adequate performance in more than one GCE subject.
Alongside this, you will also need GCSE grades at A* to C (or equivalent) and/or 9 to 4 (or equivalent) in subjects such as maths and English
You can also access the course through the following:
- Other related Level 3 qualifications
- An Access to Higher Education Diploma from an approved further education institution
- Relevant work experience
- An international equivalent to the above qualifications
You will also have an informal interview with the course tutor to discuss suitability for the course to make sure it suits your career aspirations.
Assessment methods may vary across modules and can include a combination of written assignments, practical coaching assessments, presentations, case studies, and reflective portfolios. Assessments are designed to evaluate students’ understanding, application, and critical analysis of course content, as well as their practical coaching skills and professionalism.
What could these qualifications lead to? The Level 4 Higher National Certificate provides a solid grounding, which students can build on if they decide to continue their studies. Once students have achieved the Level 4 Higher National Certificate, they can develop their careers in the sector by:
- Progression onto the Higher National Diploma in Sport
- Progression onto Higher National Diploma in Sport and Exercise Science
- Entering employment
- Continuing current employment
- Committing to continuing professional development, or
- Going to university
- To equip students with community coaching skills, knowledge and the understanding necessary to achieve high performance in the UK community coaching environment
- To provide insight and understanding into the diversity of roles within Sport & Exercise Science and community coaching, recognising the importance of collaboration at all levels
- To equip students with knowledge and understanding of culturally diverse organisations, cross-cultural issues, diversity and values
- To provide opportunities for students to enter or progress in employment in community coaching, or progress to higher education qualifications such as an Honours degree in Sport & Exercise Science or a related area
- To provide opportunities for students to develop the skills, techniques and personal attributes essential for successful working lives
- To provide students with opportunities to address contemporary issues facing the industry, and society at large; with particular emphasis on sustainability and the environment, recognising the role that Sport & Exercise Science plays in addressing these issues
- To provide opportunities for students to achieve a nationally-recognised professional qualification within their chosen area of specialisation
- To provide opportunities for students to achieve vendor accredited certifications
- To offer students the chance of career progression in their chosen field, with particular emphasis on achieving management-level positions, professional recognition and beyond
- To allow flexibility of study and to meet local or specialist needs
- To offer a balance between employability skills and the knowledge essential for students with entrepreneurial, employment or academic aspirations
- To provide students with opportunities to engage in an industry-recognised apprenticeship scheme that aligns with their employer’s needs and their own career aspirations
The course is studied 2 days per week over 30 weeks.
The total fee for this course is £6165.00.
Students may be eligible for student finance to cover the cost of the course as well as a maintenance loan to help with living costs.
