Football Excellence Students Triumph at New York City Cup, Becoming Double Winners for the Second Time

TyneMet College’s Football Excellence students have once again made their mark on the international stage, returning home as double champions of the prestigious New York City Cup. Thirty of the college’s top footballers from the Blyth Spartans Academy, representing the Under-17 and Under-19 teams, travelled to New York in July to compete in the highly competitive tournament. This remarkable achievement marks the second time that TyneMet College has secured double titles in the competition, having first achieved the win in 2022.

The three-day tournament, held from July 12-14, saw both teams excel in their respective categories, each consisting of eight teams hailing from across the UK, Canada, and the United States. After a gruelling schedule of one match on Friday and two on Saturday, both the Under-17 and Under-19 teams reached the finals on Sunday, July 14th.

In the finals, the Under-17s delivered a stellar performance, emerging victorious without conceding a single goal throughout the entire competition—a testament to their defensive strength and tactical discipline. The Under-19s clinched their title in dramatic fashion, with a late goal by standout player Ollie Farley, securing their victory with just 10 minutes remaining on the clock. Thomas Herron, another remarkable player, who is currently awaiting knee surgery, made a triumphant 10-minute appearance after receiving medical clearance, during which he scored a crucial goal.

Three of the students—Paul Dudgeon, Rio Joisce, and Luca Shilling—are now two-time champions, having also been part of TyneMet’s victorious campaign in 2022. Adding to the excitement was the last-minute addition of Adam Hood, an American student from Mississippi, who flew in to fill a spot on the TyneMet team. Adam’s participation was made possible through the efforts of TyneMet College alumni, Callum Harley, who now coaches football in the United States and maintains strong ties with TyneMet’s Head Coach, Marc Nash.

Beyond the pitch, the students had the opportunity to enjoy the vibrant culture of New York City. Highlights of the trip included attending a New York Mets baseball game, visiting the 9/11 Memorial Museum, exploring Central Park and Times Square, and taking in the views from the Rockefeller Center and sunset over Brooklyn Bridge.

Head Coach Marc Nash expressed his immense pride in the students, stating,

I couldn’t be more proud of the team. The way they played throughout the competition was nothing short of exceptional. Despite facing tough opposition and playing in intense heat, they remained focused and determined. To come out as double winners for the second time is just unbelievable and a true testament to their talent and hard work."

The team’s extraordinary success not only highlights the quality of TyneMet’s Football Excellence programme in partnership with Blyth Spartans AFC but also underscores the commitment and passion of the students and staff. This achievement will undoubtedly inspire future generations of TyneMet footballers as they continue to strive for excellence on and off the field.
