BTEC Extended Diploma in Business – Level 3

Course Overview

You will gain essential business skills from industry experts; giving you an introduction to business operations and management as well as key academic, research and communications skills.

The business and professional services sector is predicted to expand and provide exciting employment opportunities with some of the country’s leading employers right here in the region.

 

This course will set you up with the employability skills you need to succeed in a variety of business careers by helping you to develop practical skills and a theoretical understanding of the world of business.

To gain the full Level 3 Extended Diploma qualification, you will study this over two years.

  • Level 3 Foundation Diploma (Year 1)
  • Level 3 Extended Diploma (Year 2)

To study the course, you will need 5 GCSEs at grade 4-9 (or equivalent).

You will look in depth at business operations and management; finance, marketing, human resource management and retail, and may have opportunities to devise your own business plans and run your own business activities.

In addition to the main programme, you may have the opportunity to work towards additional qualifications, which are accredited by industry-recognised bodies.

For the Foundation Diploma, you will study units in Exploring Business, Developing a Marketing Campaign, Personal and Business Finance, Managing a Business Event, plus two optional units, for example, Customer Service, Digital Marketing, Supply Chain Operations, or Investigating Retail to name a few.

For the Extended Diploma, you will go on to study units in International Business, Principles in Management, Business Decision-making, plus three optional units, for example, Recruitment and Selection, Creative Product Promotion, Pitching a Small Business, The English Legal System, or Investment Opportunities and Financial Planning to name a few.

You will have the opportunity to specialise in:

  • Business operations
  • Business management and leadership
  • Marketing
  • Finance
  • Law
  • Project management

You will also undertake a work placement or workplace shadowing, as well as participating in an enterprise initiative to gain experience of setting up and running a real business under the guidance of industry specialist volunteers.

Assessment is approximately 60% coursework and 40% assessment.

Many students successfully completing the Foundation Diploma continue studying towards the BTEC Extended Diploma in Business to further develop their skills. The Extended Diploma is the equivalent to studying three A Levels.

Following the Extended Diploma, this qualification is a great stepping stone into further study at college or university in business management or any business specialism such as marketing, human resources, accountancy, and law. Other opportunities include the Higher National Certificate in Business or progression to a higher level apprenticeship.
