Course Overview

This is a popular, part-time ‘beginners’ counselling course with a strong focus on the person–centred approach. It is delivered over 3 hours per week in 29 weeks. This course introduces learners to counselling skills development & underpinning theoretical knowledge. The course is offered with daytime or evening study options by very experienced tutors with an excellent industry reputation.

This qualification gives learners the opportunity to investigate the knowledge and practice the methods needed to use counselling skills and engage in a helping interaction appropriately. This is an ideal course for those wishing to develop their communication and listening skills and can assist individuals in many working roles.

 

 

 

The course is for you if you are interested in:

  • Learning more about counselling from three theoretical perspectives; the Person Centred Approach, the Psychodynamic Approach and CBT
  • Developing confidence in listening and communication skills. This can enhance personal and professional relationships and help you understand yourself and others.
  • Identifying and practicing a range of skills suited to counselling interactions
  • Learning how to establish, maintain and end a counselling relationship.
  • An opportunity to practically develop counselling skills within the classroom.
  • A greater understanding and appreciation of yourself (personal development), ideal for increasing self-confidence and self-awareness.
  • In addition, you will have the opportunity to learn about diversity and ethics relating to counselling, including creating boundaries.

This course is a practical introduction for those interested in becoming a counsellor or working in a listening capacity. Roles that can be enhanced by this course include health and social care, children’s care, learning and development, voluntary and community work.

The course will also develop your literacy/English Skills as well as information and communication technology skills.

You will have the opportunity to explore the British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP) ethical framework for good practice, anti-discriminatory practice. In addition, you will have the opportunity to explore your own beliefs, blocks to listening and learning and giving and receiving feedback. You will engage in self-reflection with a view to develop skills and personal qualities that align to ethical and professional counselling practice.

You will be working in a group of around 18 people from a wide range of backgrounds. The sessions will be facilitated by an experienced counselling teacher proficient in the field of counselling. You will receive regular written and verbal feedback on your written work and during classroom activities. Course work will be assessed by your teacher.
There is no exam on this course as you will submit your completed portfolio towards the end of the course.
There are no prior learning requirements for this course.
This course is studied part time over one academic year. 3 hours per week over 29 weeks.
No formal entry requirements are required, but we would expect students to have a keen interest to learn.
You will be assessed by completing a weekly journal workbook that forms part of your learning. You will also complete one case study. There is no exam for this qualification.
Subject to successful interviews you can access our Level 3 Certificate in Counselling Studies. This is a 29 week course delivered with daytime or evening options. You will then have the option to apply for the Foundation Degree in Counselling which is franchised through the University of Sunderland.

Whilst the online version of Level 2 Certificate in Counselling Skills is useful for both professional development of your role and personal development to some degree, there is NO counselling skills development support offered online.

Developing counselling skills, with a professionally qualified teacher and practitioner is essential to access Level 3 counselling training and becoming a more effective, ethically trained listener.

You will be taught by an experienced teacher, who is also a counselling therapist, who will help nurture your ability to listen more effectively, and offer constructive feedback designed to help you develop your ability to listen to others in the same way as therapists do. There are excellent opportunities to work with others in class to develop your counselling skills, with the experienced guidance of your teacher.
