Diploma in Introduction to Hairdressing
Level 1
Course Overview
The Level 1 Hairdressing Fundamentals course is designed for individuals who are passionate about hairdressing and eager to begin their journey in the field. This foundational course provides students with essential knowledge and practical skills required to kickstart their career in the hairdressing industry. Throughout the course, students will learn the basics of hairdressing techniques, client consultation, health and safety practices, and professional skills.
There will be the option of studying the Level 1 Certificate or Level 1 Diploma and the right option for you will be discussed with the course leader.
To study the course, you will need a GCSE grade 2 or above in Maths and English or a functional skills level 1 in English and maths.
ESOL students should have an Entry 3 level qualification in English or above.
Assessment is based on practical demonstrations and written assignments.
On completion of the course, you can progress onto the Level 2 Certificate or Diploma in Hairdressing.

- Shampooing
- Women’s hair styling
- Using temporary colour to create an image
- Hair plaiting
- Salon reception
- Health & Safety
- Working with others in the hair & beauty industry
- Styling men’s hair
- Hand care
- Professional image
- Working in the hair & beauty industry
- Create an image on a theme
For students aged 16-18 who have not yet achieved a grade 4 in Maths or English, these subjects will be included in your timetable along with your main course. Improving your skills in Maths and English is essential, as these qualifications open doors to further study and career opportunities.
Our teaching team will work with you to help you achieve the grades you need, building confidence in these key areas to support your future success.
All 16-18 students must study maths and/or English as part of their main study programme, there is no option to study maths and/or English on its own.
