T Level in Design and Development for Engineering and Manufacturing

Course Overview

The T Level in Design and Development for Engineering and Manufacturing is a  two-year qualification designed for students who are interested in a career in the engineering and manufacturing sectors. This qualification provides a blend of classroom learning and hands-on experience through an industry placement, preparing students for skilled roles in product design, systems engineering, manufacturing technologies, and more.

 

 

The course allows learners to gain an understanding of what is needed to work within the engineering industry.  Topics covered include customer and client requirements, principles of design, design processes and communication in design.

 

To study the course, you will need GCSE grade 6 in Maths and Sciences and a grade 5 in English.

If you do not meet the entry requirements to study the T Level, there is the option to study a Level 2 course.

As part of the T Level, you will study the following topics which is made up of core content and occupational specialisms.

  • Working within engineering and manufacturing sectors.
  • Engineering and manufacturing past, present and future.
  • Engineering representations.
  • Essential mathematics for engineering and manufacturing.
  • Essential Science for engineering and manufacturing.
  • Materials and their properties.
  • Mechanical Principles.
  • Electrical and electronic principles.
  • Mechantronics.
  • Engineering and manufacturing control systems.
  • Quality management.
  • Health and safety prinicples and coverage.
  • Business, commerical and financial awareness.
  • Professional responsibilities, attitudes and behaviours.
  • Stock and asset management.
  • Continuous improvement.
  • Project and programme management
In addition to completing the mandatory core component, students will have the choice of studying one standalone occupational specialism as listed below.
  • Mechanical engineering
  • Electrical and electronic engineering
  • Control and instrumentation engineering
  • Structural engineering

 

The T Level qualification will develop the knowledge and skills businesses want and prepares you for progression to the following

  • Work
  • Apprenticeship
  • Higher Education

UCAS tariff points will be allocated and will be equivalent in value to three A Levels.

As part of the T Level, you will be assessed through externally assessed exams and assignments as well as employer set projects.
