TyneMet catering students inspired after visit from former student

TyneMet catering students are feeling inspired after a recent visit from former student, Darryl Duffy. Darryl is currently the Head Chef at The Old Boat House in Amble and stepped back in to our kitchens to inspire a new generation of chefs. Darryl studied catering at TyneMet from 2007 to 2010 and since developing his skills at TyneMet, he has had an enviable career that has seen him travel all over the country. After leaving college, he went to work at the Four Seasons Hotel in Hampshire for over two years where he was based in the pastry section.

From there, Darryl then moved to Central London to work for Gordon Ramsay at his Claridges restaurant during the London Olympics which he described as an ‘incredibly busy year’.  He then progressed to sous-chef at Prestonfield House Hotel in Edinburgh where he managed the day- to-day running of the kitchen and then after a short period at the Michelin star Balmoral Hotel he then took on the role as Head Chef at the Old Boat House. During his visit back to TyneMet, Darryl spoke to the students about his amazing career as well as delivering an inspiring workshop to give our students an insight in to his day-to-day role as Head Chef. Darryl commented:

It was a great experience to come back to the college after 10 years of working around the country. I feel it’s always important to help develop and inspire the next generation of chefs to keep the industry going strong.

After the workshop, TyneMet catering student, Molly Etherington said:

The workshop with Darryl was really good, I learnt lots of new skills and it was great to see someone who has done so well in his career after studying at TyneMet. It has really inspired me to do well.

What an amazing career, thank you Darryl for your amazing support!
